Is Social Media Influencing Your Mental Health?

Our Body Image & Social Media

Body image is the way we feel and think about our bodies – the way we view ourselves and our physical image can impact on us throughout our lives. This doesn’t only influence the way we think about ourselves but it also influences the state of our mental wellbeing as a whole.

Body image is the mental picture that we have when we think of our bodies and also the way we feel about it when we look in the mirror. Our body image is both mentally and physically connected.

The way that we view ourselves is often dictated by the comparisons which we draw with other people. Social media has made access to idealised beauty difficult to avoid and has had a considerable influence over body image for many people. This concept of what is ‘perfect’ or even ‘acceptable’ has undoubtedly presented unexpected challenges regarding our mental health.

Body image should focus on our individual qualities and the strengths we have that make us feel good about ourselves. We should avoid comparing ourselves to other people and media presented ideals.

Your body image is about more than just physicality, it can affect your self-esteem, self-confidence and self-perception. All of which are major factors in your personality and the way you act and feel on a daily basis.
